Mesopotamia-  River Valley Civilization
1.       List 3 factors that paved the way for the development of the river valley civilization.
a)      The soil of the river valley is very fertile. Hence agriculture was easier.
b)      They could get water easily for theirselves, cattles and for the fields.
c)       They could get food by fishing, grow crops and could get soft clay for building their houses.

2.       What is meant by civilization?
The word civilization comes from the Latin word’Civis’ which means ,”Citizen of a city”. A civilization consists of the Art, Customs, technology, form of government, and everything else that makes up the way of life in the society.

3.       Match the items in column A with column B

7.       What are ziggurats? Why were they built?
These are pyramid shaped terraces built beside the temple. It is built as a homage to their God. At the top was a shrine  (temple) meant for God when he came down among his people.

8.       Name the main divisions of Sumerian society and people constituting each class?
i)                    The upper class- made up of members of the royal family, priests and high officials.
ii)                   Middle class- Farmers, artisans and traders.
iii)                 Lower class- Consists of slaves , who tilled the land. Slaves were treated well.

9.       Name the crop that was first cultivated by the Sumerians?
Wheat

10.   State the contribution made by  Sumerians in the field of mathematics?
They introduced the system of counting in units of 60—which is the basis of the 360 degree circle and the 60-minute hour.

11.   Who was Hammurabi?
He was the best known king of the Babylonian dynasty. He ruled Babylon for 42years from 1792 BC—1750 BC.

12.   What is the code of Hammurabi? State its underlying  principle?
It was Hammurabi, who compiled the first law of codes in history, known by his name’Code of Hammurabi’.    The main principle of the code was that “ the strong shall not injure  the weak”. The punishments were based on the principle of “an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth”.

13.   Why  were the hanging gardens of Babylon so called?(not in text book)
The Hanging gardens of Babylon, are called because the plants are cultivated at a height above the ground level,and the roots of the trees are embedded in an upper  terrace.

14.   Mention two contributions of the Babylon civilization to the world of science.
The sun-dial was used to measure time during the day and the water clock during the night. They also developed a calendar based on the movement of the moon. The year was divided into 12months of 29-30 days each.

15.   Mention 3 causes that led to the fall of the Babylonian Empire?
i)                    In 539 BC –persian invaders captured Babylon and it became a part of Persian empire.
ii)                   In 331 BC- Alexander  the great of  macedonia, captured Babylon and made it as his capital.
iii)                 After the death of Alexander, Selucas became the king of Babylom and  he founded  a new capital called ‘selucia’ near Tigris and people started migrating to selucia.Babylon fell  to ruins.
