Year 10 - H&G Notes - 22.4.14

Thai Sikh International School
Year9,Geo Notes. Topic10. [Urban sprawl& Case study, Atlanta.]
1.      What do you mean by Urban Sprawl? State the difference between Urban sprawl in MEDs and LEDs.
The expansion of the city into its surrounding rural area is known as Urban Sprawl. As population increase in towns and cities, urban sprawl takes place. This happens in both MEDCs and LEDCs. But the outcome is similar. In both cases the urban area expands into the country side, affecting people and changing the environment in the rural area. Land use also changes around the urban area for the benefit of some and to the disadvantage of others.
2.      Write a note on Atlanta and show how rapidly the city grows.
Atlanta is the capital city of Georgia State. Its population has grown from 1.4 million in 1970 to a figure of 51380000in the US in 2006 census. Between 2000 and 2006 Atlanta added almost I million residents. Thus it became the fastest growing metropolitan city in the USA. One third of the increase was by births and the rest from newcomers. This growth has inevitably resulted in urban sprawl.
3.      Give reasons why Atlanta became an important city.
The city was established in the 1840s in woodland near the junction of railway lines. It was called the city in the forest. Its location was ideal to link the north-east with south-east USA. An airport was built and it became a financial centre. Recent population growth has been caused by new comers from cities and so unemployment is high.  The city now has a reputation of wall –to wall office, shopping centers and suburbs.
4.      Mention the problems that rapid population growth has created in Atlanta. What are the planers aiming to do?
The Atlanta today is traffic chocked, over developed and polluted. It has a major water supply crisis. Today planners are trying to give the city an environmental makeover and economic boost. The city’s new plan is focused in the city rather than on the edge. Heavy investment has been made to make buildings green such as university campus. Public transport with a 35- mile belt line project which combined light rail with new pedestrian and bike links were created. “Trees Atlanta” is also using volunteers to plant different types of trees. Residents are now starting to move back inside the city limits.
