Year 8 - H&G Notes - 5.5.14

Thai Sikh International School
Year 8 , Geo Notes[6.5 Energy Fuel and Electricity]
  1.      Write a note on Corfe Castle village, in Dorset.
Corfe Castle village is less than 5km from the south coast of UK. The Castle itself was built by the Normans. It once belonged to Henry VIII. But his daughter Elizabeth I sold it. Now it is in ruins.
  2.      What is the advantage of using wind turbines?
Wind turbines don’t burn fuels. So no carbon-dioxide.
  3.      Why do people often object to wind farms?
People often object to wind farms because they think that will disturb wild life, or be too noisy or spoil a lovely view.
  4.      How large are Turbo winds?
The turbo wind turbines are120m tall, from base to wing tip, or 15 times as high as two storey house.

6.6 [ Are bio fuels the answer?]

   5.      What are bio fuels? Give an example for it.
Bio fuels are liquids made from plant material, to use as fuels for vehicles. Ethanol is an example.
   6.      Explain how Ethanol is prepared from corn, in USA.
At the bio fuel plant, the corn kernels are grounded up. Water and enzymes are added. The enzymes turn the corn starch into Ethanol. The ethanol is distilled off and mixed with petrol.
   7.      Ethanol business in Mexico has led to a rise in meat prices. How?
Earlier farmers used to grow corn for food and feeding cattle. But now many farmers have switched to corn from other crops, because they can earn more for corn, for ethanol. So the price of many foods is rising, especially meat prices.

6.7 [Solar power a winner?]

   8.      What is a PV cell? Give its full name and say what it does?
PV cell is an instrument used to produce current from sun light. Its full name is Photo Voltaic Cell. When sunlight strikes a PV cell, a current is produced.
   9.      What are the main advantages of solar power? List them in order of importance.
Ø  In PV cell, no fuel is burned- so no carbon-dioxide.
Ø  At first they cost a lot- but now they are getting cheaper.

Ø  We can store up the electricity from PV cell in a big battery, to use it later.
Ø  Every home can make its own electricity.
  10.  Is there any disadvantage of using PV cells?
It can be used in places and countries where there is more sunlight.

6.8 [Going Solar in Gosaba.]

  11.  Where is Gosaba?
Gosaba is a small island in an area called Sunder bans, in India.
   12.  Explain why there are so many islands in Sunder bans?
Sunder bans is a delta area. It has 102 islands. The water flowing out from two great rivers, the Ganges and Brahmaputra, deposited sediments in the area over millions of years. It built up to form the islands- and the water just ran around them.
  13.  What problems kerosene can cause when it is used for lighting and cooking?
Kerosene is made from oil. It gives out soot that turns wall and ceilings black, and fumes that irritate our eyes and lungs. It gives a dim light. It can also set the house on fire.
