Year 10 - H&G Notes - 10.4.14

Thai Sikh International School.
Year 10, Geo Notes [Manufacturing Industry.]
1.      Mention the physical and human factors influencing the location of a factory.
a.       Physical factors:
1.      Site requirement: While choosing the site for locating a factory, the question to be asked “Is there cheap land available of the correct size, level and well drained.
2.      Natural routes: Is there a natural land or sea route , which provides speedy and cheap transportation of raw materials and industrial goods.
b..Human factors: These include i)Access to market. ii)Availability of raw materials. Iii) Skilled labor.
Iv)Power supply. V) Industrial linkage. Vi) Capital and vii) Government policies.
    2. What do you mean by Secondary Industry?
Manufacturing involves making things. It is the production of goods by industrial processes. It is classified as
secondary industry and is an important economic sector. Secondary industries take raw materials produced
by the primary sector and process them into manufactured goods and products.
3.Explain the processes involved in a manufacturing steel industry that turns the raw materials into molten
       steel.?
The main raw material used in the manufacturing steel industry is Limestone iron or coke. First the impurities
are removed in the blast furnace and converted into pig iron. The molten pig iron or scrap is then passed with
the basic oxygen furnace for oxidation and for further removing impurities. Thus it becomes molten steel in
the finishing mill which can be sent to the finishing mill for converting it to different steel final products.

Topic 24. Manufacturing steel- Pakistan.

    1.      Why did Pakistan need an iron and steel plant of its own after 1947?

    2.      What outside help was needed for Pakistan to start the Iron and Steel Industry? Why was it needed?
Pakistan Steel mills Corporation was set up as a private limited company controlled by the government with the objective of establishing and running steel mills at Karachi and other places in Pakistan.
Russian finance and expertise was sought as Pakistan does not have the capital or skilled labor to build these steel mills.
    3.      List environmental factors that influenced the location of Pakistan steel?
The original location was chosen to be out of the way on marshy land near a tidal creek that nobody wanted. The steel works may not be the prettiest place. The plant was built 40 km downwind of Karachi so that any pollution- air and noise- would not blow over areas where people live.
    4.      List the ways that show the company has tried to improve the environment since it began producing steel?
Pakistan steel has invested in making the environment green and beautiful. They have reforested the area around the factories and set new targets for waste and pollution reduction. Extensive work has been carried out on water treatment, especially of fresh water supplies. They have also created a land scaped cricket ground, lakes, bird sanctuaries and a running track for employees.
