Thai Sikh International School
Year 9, Geo Notes [Urban problems.]
    1.      Identify four biggest problems of living in cities.
1.      Providing homes.
2.      Providing services.
3.      Transport facilities.
4.      Providing Job or employment.
    2.      Explain the term urban decay.
Urban decay occurs when parts of the city become run-down and undesirable to live in. Examples of urban decay are:
1.      Slum housing with outside toilets.
2.      Buildings with leaking roofs and
3.      Empty buildings boarded up.
3 .What is comprehensive redevelopment? What is its criticism?
There have been number of schemes to reduce the problems of urban decay. Comprehensive redevelopment     occurs when all the buildings are knocked down and the area is completely built. For example old housing and        factories demolished and replaced by new flats and multi storied buildings. But this method is criticized as
people   have to move from their homes and working place during the process.
4  . What is the popular method adopted for solving urban decay?
Urban regeneration is the popular method adopted by most of the MEDCs for solving urban decay. It is the      renovation of existing housing and improvement of the environment and economy. It includes:
   1.      Removing the homes.
   2.      Cleaning the outsides of old building.
   3.      Improving the environment by landscaping etc. This has been proved more popular as people have been able to stay in their own area.

Urban Problems and Solutions-[Cairo]
1. Write a note about Cairo as a city with problems.
Cairo is located around the banks and Island of the river Nile in the north of Egypt. Since 1950s the city’s growth has been rapid, rising from 2million to 18 million by 2000. The growth has been too rapid for the city to cope with increasing demands for services such as piped water, schools, paved roads and electricity. Traffic congestion , along with noise , air pollution add to the problems.

2.What attempts have been made by the government to solve urban problems in Cairo?
1. New satellite and dormitory towns built around the city.
2. Homes and public services were upgraded.
3. Ring road built, encircling the city.
4. A modern metro system was built to reduce traffic congestion.
5. The greater Cairo waste water project extended and repaired the sewage system.

3. List four main problems faced by Cairo.
 1. Lack of housing: Half a million people live in homemade huts on roof spaces of office blocks and flats in the city center.
2. Traffic congestion: Travel to work time will be very slow.
3. Lack of Jobs: Jobs for unskilled workers are hard to find.
4. Pollution: The air is polluted by vehicle exhausts and ground water is polluted by waste illegally dumped by factories and workshops.

Urban Problems solutions-Baltimore.
1.Write a note about Baltimore as a city with problems.
Baltimore is the biggest city in the state of Mary land, USA, with a population of 650000. In early days, harbor was the landing destination for boats and ships bringing cargoes. Today the area is a successful example of urban renewal. Over 100 hectares of previously derelict industrial buildings and waste land have been transformed into a mix of business, housing recreation and tourist attractions.
2.How far did the urban redevelopment scheme have been successful in Baltimore to solve the urban problems?

The urban redevelopment scheme has been very successful in Baltimore to solve the urban problems. The scheme has created both jobs and housing and changed the economic base of the city. The mixture of business, residential, recreational and cultural developments has made it attractive to different groups of people. Baltimore‘s proximity to Washington DC has been crucial. Costs were lower than in Washington DC, but the standard of living was as high. It is only 45 minutes between the centers of Washington DC and Baltimore. There are over 30 trains a day linking the two cities. Washington International Air port is located between them.
