The
night before the County Fair, everyone was busy dreaming about all the fun they
would have the next day. Everyone
went to bed early. Everyone had
dreams about the County Fair. Fern dreamt about
getting sick in the swing. Avery dreamt about playing in the Ferris
Wheel. Lurvy dreamt about winning a Navajo Blanket. Mrs. Zuckerman dreamt of a
deep freeze unit. Mr. Zuckerman dreamt of Wilbur being grown one hundred and
sixteen feet long and ninety – two feet high and that he had won all the prizes
at the fair. He also dreamt that Wilbur was covered with blue ribbons and even
had a blur ribbon tied to the end of the tail.
The next day everyone was ready to go to the fair. Lurvy put clean straw
in Wilbur’s crate and lifted it into the pigpen to shove Wilbur in. The crate
was green and in gold letters it said, Zuckerman’s Famous Pig’.
Mrs. Zuckerman decided to give Wilbur
needed a buttermilk bath so that it cleans him well; her husband believed
Wilbur was already clean, but after his bath, he looked even better.
Charlotte decided that she would go as
Wilbur might need her and there should be someone who could write. She declared
that she would need Templeton as she might need good words to be woven on her
web. At first, he refuses, but when the sheep explains to him about all the
leftover food he can gorge (overeat) himself on at the Fair, he happily agrees.
Templeton hides under the fresh hay and Charlotte gets into the knothole of the
crate before Wilbur does. The sheep told Wilbur that he should struggle when
they try to get him to go into the crate or they might think something had
bewitched him. Templeton was scared that Wilbur would hurt him by stepping on
him. So he warns him to be careful about him while struggling to get inside the
crate.
When everyone sees Wilbur, they all
comment on how good Wilbur looked with the buttermilk bath and Mr. Arable told
Zuckerman that he would get extra ham and bacon when it was time to kill.
Hearing this Wilbur fainted out of fear.
Lurvy poured a pail of
water which brought Wilbur to conscious and Wilbur was shoved into the crate.
Everybody went cheerfully to the Fair
