Year 6 - English - 10-11-14

Chapter 4
The road through the forest

After a few hours the road began to be rough, and the walking grew so difficult. There were fewer houses and fewer fruit trees.  Dorothy told him all about Kansas, and how gray everything was there, and how the cyclone had carried her to this queer Land of Oz. The Scarecrow listened carefully and asked her why she wanted to return back to Kansas. Dorothy replied that no matter how dreary and gray homes are, people of flesh and blood would rather live there than in any other country as there is no place like home.
Then the scarecrow started to tell his story of existence. Its life has been so short that it was only made day before yesterday. The farmer made his head first, one of the first things he did was to paint his ears, so that the scarecrow heard what was going on. There was another Munchkin with the farmer. Then the farmer made his eyes with which the scarecrow could everything around him with a great deal of curiosity, for that was his first glimpse of the world.
Then he made the nose and the mouth. The scarecrow then had the fun of watching them make his body and his arms and legs; and when they fastened on the head he felt very proud for he was just as good a man as anyone.
The farmer carried him under his arm to the cornfield, and set the scarecrow up on a tall stick. Many crows and other birds flew into the cornfield, but as soon as they saw the  they flew away the scarecrow was a Munchkin; an old crow flew near and found the scarecrow to be a straw stuffed man.  Since then the scarecrow decided that brains are the only things worth having in the world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man.
So the scarecrow wanted to ask the Great Oz to give him brains as soon as they got to the Emerald City.
Soon they found a cottage made of logs and Dorothy entered and found a bed of dried leaves in one corner. She lay down at once, and with Toto beside her soon fell into a sound sleep. The Scarecrow, who was never tired, stood up in another corner and waited patiently until morning came.
